The Journey of Media Through Time

 Media Studies

In the past, before the development of modern media, people relied on oral communicationto convey messages. This included verbal communication, non verbal communication and body language. Through spoken words, gestures, facial expressions, and signs, people shared information, emotions, traditions, and cultural values within their communities.


Verbal Communication
It is a type of communication by using spoken words to provide our message. For example, Teacher is teaching in the class, (using words understanding the students).

Nonverbal Communication

t is a type of communication by using gesture or body language for understanding the audience. For example,

So, before the Media, people were using sings for providing their messages to their audience.


 Media Evolution
 To understand the concept of Mass Media, First we have to know Mass communication too.
Communication
 
Communication is the process of sharing information, news, knowledge, convening or providing messages.
Communication can be a verbal, Nonverbal or any sings for understanding the audience.

Mass communication
 Mass communication is a type of communication providing the message to a large number of people at a same time by using mass media.
For mass communication, mass media is required everywhere. Such as, print media, electronic media, social media etc.
For better understanding of mass communication, we need to know the following models
1) Transmission model
2) Expressive model
3) Publicity model
4) Reception model








Historical Evolution of Mass communication / Mass Media

Printing Press
In 1455 A.D, Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable printing press. This invention is considered a turning point in the history of mass communication.
Before the printing press, books were written by hands which took a lot of time. The printing press made printing faster, easy allowing many copies to be produced.
With the help of printing press, the literacy rate of education increased.  
                   Gutenberg’s printing press made communication faster, cheaper, and accessible which changed the society, culture, and
religion.

Industrial Revolution
During the industrial revolution, machine made it possible to produce goods in a large quantities, because products were made on a mass scale, companies needed ways to inform and attract large audience. This led to the devolvement of mass media. Factories produced goods faster and cheaper than before. Mass production required mass.

Invention of modern communication tools

1843- Telegram (Samuel mores)

it allowed message to be sent over a long distance quickly using electrical signals.

1874- Typewriter

made writing faster, clear, and more professional.

1876 telephone

Enable people to talk to each other instantly over long distance.

1877- Phonograph

 Made it possible to record and play sound for the first time.

These inventions improved speed accuracy and reach of communication.

Electronic Media
Electronic media refers to the Radio, television and other electronic media.
Radio: In 1920, there came a radio and first radio broadcast took place in the United State, allowing information and entrainment to reach many people at once.
In 1926 the first radio network NBC was formed. This made radio a powerful mass communication medium. Radio allowed business to advertise products directly to the listeners in their homes.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt used radio to speak directly to the people through his “Firesid Chats” during the great depression and World War 2.


The Rise of Television
In 1940, there came a television and after world war 2 , it became popular. Major radio networks like CBS, NBS, and ABC shifted toward television broadcasting. Television combined sound and visual, making communication more powerful and engaging than radio.
In 1965, CBS and ABC aired all prime time shows in the color TVs became more popular and white TVs. Also, in 1948 cable Tv started in the Pennsylvania at CATV, to improve tv signals in the weak signal areas.


The Digital Foundation: 1960 and 1770

During the 1960s and 1970s the base of modern digital communication was created.

1969 Arpanet

The first computer network and the foundation of the internet.

1972 HBO

It became the first premium television channel, changing tv entertainment.

1979 cell phone network

The first mobile phone network started in Japan, allowing wireless communication.


The Digital Revolution: 1990s and early 2000s

This period marked the rapid growth of digital and online communication.

1994 internet commercialized

The internet became available for public and business use.

2003 Myspace

One if the first social media networking website.

2004 Facebook

In 2004, there came a Facebook and social media became popular worldwide.

2006s twitter

In 2006, introduced short, fast communication through tweets.



Conclusion

The evolution of media shows how human communication has grown from simple oral messages to advanced digital and social media. Each stage made communication faster, wider, and more effective. Today, media connects people globally, shapes opinions, spreads information instantly, and plays a vital role in education, culture, and society. Overall, the evolution of media reflects human progress and the need to communicate better in a changing world.
